World Collie Day

Originating in Scotland, the Collie has long been known for its skill in herding sheep. Over the years, these shepherding dogs have also become masters at capturing the hearts of those lucky enough to welcome a Collie into their family. Collie breeds are so cherished that they even have their own special day: World Collie Day.

When is World Collie Day?

World Collie Day is celebrated every year on July 21st.

Did you know that there are many types of Collies? While we’ll focus on the Border Collie, Bearded Collie, Rough Collie, and Smooth Collie, there are several other Collie-type dogs, including:

  • Australian Cattle Dog
  • Australian Kelpie
  • Australian Shepherd
  • Blue Lacy
  • Shetland Sheepdog
  • Welsh Sheepdog

Although the exact origin of the breed’s name is unclear, some believe that “Collie” comes from the Gaelic word for “useful.”

Rough and Smooth Collies

  • Texas A&M’s Mascot: Since 1966, a Rough Collie has proudly served as the mascot for Texas A&M University. The first was Reveille III, and each subsequent mascot has carried the same name, with Reveille X taking over in 2021.
  • Lassie’s Legacy: A bronze statue of Lassie stands in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where the famous dog story was penned by Eric Knight. The statue is a tribute to the Rough Collie that inspired the iconic tale.
  • Lassie on the Big Screen: Lassie, originally portrayed by a Rough Collie named Pal, was the first movie dog to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was also the first dog inducted into the Animal Actors Hall of Fame.

Border Collies

  • Monument in New Zealand: Since 1968, a bronze statue of a Border Collie has watched over Lake Tekapo in New Zealand, honoring the breed’s role in protecting sheep flocks.
  • A Loyal Companion: In Cumbria, England, a bronze statue of a Border Collie named Ruswarp stands as a tribute to his loyalty. Ruswarp was found 11 weeks after his owner went missing, still standing guard over his lifeless body.

Bearded Collies

  • The Oldest Breed in Britain: The Bearded Collie is believed to be the oldest dog breed in Great Britain, affectionately known as the ‘Beardie.’
  • Crufts Champion: In 1989, a Bearded Collie named Potterdale Classic of Moonhill won Best in Show at Crufts, one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world.
  • Hollywood Appearance: A Bearded Collie named Cole portrayed Khyi Yang Po in the 2006 comedy “The Shaggy Dog,” where the character’s DNA turns Tim Allen into a dog.

World Collie Day is the perfect time to celebrate these remarkable dogs, whether they’re known for their herding skills, their Hollywood fame, or simply the love they bring to their families.
