Pet Hunger Awareness Day

When families face financial difficulties the effects are also felt by the four-legged members in the household.  An estimated 30 million companion animals reside in residences where meals are scarce, so to turn the tide on the issue of food insecurity PetSmart Charities has partnered with Feeding America for a pet holiday that provides both nutritious meals for dogs and cats in need, as well as sustenance for the soul.

When is Pet Hunger Awareness Day?

Since 2023, Pet Hunger Awareness Day has been observed on the last Tuesday in September.

PetSmart Charities’ partnership with Feeding America was launched in 2017, and as of 2024, 66 million pounds of pet food has been distributed to financially-challenged pet parents through partner food banks.  The need to raise awareness of pet hunger in the United States led to the creation of the annual pet holiday, when those in need can pick up food both for themselves and for their fur babies at certain food banks in:

  • Detroit
  • El Paso
  • Indianapolis
  • Minneapolis
  • New York City
  • Phoenix
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Antonio
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Tampa Bay

Pet parents everywhere who are dealing with financial distress are also encouraged to visit their own local food banks to inquire if they offer pet food, or will at a future date.

“For a majority of people in America, family includes pets. We see this bond firsthand at many food banks when neighbors come to pick up food for their pets,” said Linda Nageotte, president and chief operating officer at Feeding America. “Their love and dedication in ensuring all members of their families – pets included – have access to the food and resources they need to thrive, makes our partnership with PetSmart Charities critical. Together, we can broaden our reach in the collective movement to end hunger in the U.S.”

Meals on Wheels

Approximately 1 in 5 senior citizens give up their own food so that their dog or cat companions will not go without.  To help older pet parents in need, PetSmart Charities also partners with the Meals on Wheels Loves Pets program, which has provided pets with 13 million nutritious meals alongside food delivery for the elderly as of 2024.

“Older adults enjoy so many benefits from caring for their pets,” said Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “The comfort and companionship they offer boosts wellness, staves off feelings of isolation and helps older adults remain active. Our partnership with PetSmart Charities has helped more seniors stay in their homes together with their pets – happier and healthier.”
