National Pet Travel Safety Day is a pet holiday designed to make sure our pets are as safe as possible when we hit the road together! Whether you’re taking a short drive to the park or embarking on a long road trip, it’s essential to prioritize your pet’s safety while traveling.
When is National Pet Travel Safety Day?
National Pet Safety Day is held every year on January 2. This pet holiday was founded by Colleen Paige.
Tips for Safe Pet Travel
- Use a Pet Restraint: Just like humans, pets need to be secured in the car. Use a pet seat belt, carrier, or travel crate to prevent injuries in case of sudden stops or accidents.
- Never Let Pets Roam Freely: Allowing your pet to move around freely in the car can be distracting and dangerous. A loose pet can become a projectile in an accident, putting everyone in the car at risk.
- Avoid the Front Seat: Airbags can be deadly for pets. Keep them in the back seat to ensure their safety.
- Regular Breaks: If you’re on a long trip, take regular breaks to let your pet stretch their legs, hydrate, and relieve themselves. It’s good for both of you!
- Don’t Leave Pets in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar quickly, putting your pet at risk of heatstroke or worse. Always take your pet with you when you leave the car!
- Pack a Pet Travel Kit: Bring along everything your pet might need, including food, water, a bowl, leash, waste bags, and any medications they take regularly.
- ID Tags and Microchips: Ensure your pet has up-to-date identification tags and is microchipped with your current contact information. This is crucial in case they get lost while traveling.
- Comfort and Familiarity: Bring along your pet’s favorite blanket or toy to help them feel more secure and comfortable during the trip.
Why Pet Travel Safety Matters
