When Is National Pet Day?

National Pet Day is celebrated annually on April 11. Established in 2007 by celebrity pet and family lifestyle expert Colleen Paige—who also created National Dog Day, National Cat Day, and other animal-centric holidays—this day encourages pet lovers to consider adopting a pet in need of a forever home.

How Pets Help Us

Our pets give us so much love, and according to the CDC, that love benefits us in numerous ways:
“Studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets is linked to several health benefits, including:

  • Decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels, and feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and symptoms of PTSD.
  • Increased opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities, better cognitive function in older adults, and more chances to socialize.”

How Many Pets Are There?

We all know how much our pets mean to us, but just how many pets are there in the U.S.? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly half of all households (whether owned or rented) have at least one pet.

  • Dogs are the most popular pet, with 49 million U.S. households sharing their homes with at least one dog.
  • Over 28 million households have a cat, and cat owners are more likely to have multiple cats, so there are actually more cats than dogs in U.S. homes.

How Can You Celebrate?

National Pet Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the special bond you share with your pets. Here are a few ways to make the day extra special:

  • Take Your Pet for an Adventure: Whether it’s a long walk with your dog, a trip to the park, or a new play area for your cat, getting outside for some fresh air and exercise will be enjoyable for both of you.
  • Treat Your Pet to Something Special: Give your pet their favorite treat, or try making homemade goodies. You can also spoil them with a new toy or a cozy new bed.
  • Capture the Memories: Set aside time for a photo session with your pet. Whether you hire a professional or simply use your phone, these moments will create lasting memories.
  • Share the Love: The best gift you can give your pet is your time and attention. Spend some quiet moments cuddling, playing, or just sitting with your pet to show how much you care.
  • Give Back to Other Animals: National Pet Day is also a time to think about pets in need. Visit your local shelter to volunteer, donate supplies like blankets, pet beds, or toys, or consider adopting a new family member.
  • Consider Adoption: If you think your current pets would welcome a new companion, check out the adoptable pets at local shelters or browse online at AdoptAPet.com, PetFinder.com or PetHarbor.com! You might just find the perfect addition to your family.

National Pet Day is about celebrating all the love and joy that pets bring into our lives, while also giving back to those animals who still need a loving home. Whether you’re pampering your own pet or helping out at a local shelter, it’s a day to appreciate the special bond we share with all our animal companions.
