Itchy Pet Awareness Month

Does your pet scratch persistently—even when there’s no obvious cause? That itch could be more than just a minor annoyance; it could be an allergic reaction. To raise awareness about this common issue among pets, Itchy Pet Awareness Month was established to help pet lovers recognize when their furry friend’s itchiness might warrant a trip to the vet.

When is Itchy Pet Awareness Month?

Itchy Pet Awareness Month is observed throughout August. This awareness campaign, launched in 2019 by global animal health company Zoetis, aims to educate pet owners about the signs and causes of allergic itching. The campaign includes social media promotion under the hashtag #ItchyPetAwarenessMonth.

During its 2019 launch, Zoetis partnered with actress and animal advocate Kate Walsh for the “Show Us Your Pet’s A-Game” campaign to highlight how skin allergies and conditions can affect the overall well-being of our pets.

What are the Signs of an Allergic Itch?

Is your pet scratching, licking, or biting at their skin even though they’re free from fleas and other parasites? You’re not alone. Itching is one of the top reasons for veterinary visits among pets. While occasional scratching is normal, it should never interfere with your pet’s daily activities or cause hair loss or skin damage.

Here are some signs that your pet might be suffering from an allergic itch:

  • Frequent licking, chewing, biting, or scratching
  • Excessive rolling, rubbing, or scooting
  • Recurrent ear infections or problems
  • Hair loss
  • Unpleasant body odor
  • Rash, redness, greasy skin, or scabs

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause and find the right treatment.

How Can You Help?

For more information and resources, check out “Itching for Help” by Zoetis, which includes a veterinary FAQ on how to determine if your pet’s itching is excessive.

“If left untreated, your pet’s allergic skin condition can lead to worsening symptoms that require further medical care and significantly impact their quality of life,” says Andrew Hillier, BVSc, MANZCVS, DACVD, Veterinary Specialty Operations and Veterinary Medical Lead – Dermatology for Zoetis Petcare. “It’s important to talk to your veterinarian if your pet’s itching interferes with everyday activities.”

Zoetis Petcare produces APOQUEL, a daily oral medication that targets allergic itch at its source for dogs 12 months of age and older, and CYTOPOINT®, an injection that provides long-lasting relief for dogs of all ages with atopic and allergic dermatitis, administered at your veterinarian’s office.

While some pet owners may try over-the-counter treatments to relieve itching, Hillier notes that medications like APOQUEL can “help stop allergic itch at its source, allowing your pet to return to normal. It can provide relief as quickly as four hours, and unlike over-the-counter remedies, APOQUEL offers long-term, effective itch relief while also reducing inflammation, redness, and swelling of the skin.”

This August, take the time to observe your pet’s behavior and be proactive about their health. Itchy Pet Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to ensure your furry friends are comfortable, happy, and itch-free!
