Animal Pain Awareness Month

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing awareness about the pain that animals can experience and the importance of recognizing and addressing it. Animals, like humans, can suffer from acute or chronic pain due to injury, illness, or aging, but they may not always show it in obvious ways.

This month encourages pet owners to educate themselves on the signs of pain in their animals, such as changes in behavior, appetite, or mobility, and to seek veterinary care if pain is suspected. Early detection and proper pain management are crucial for improving the quality of life of our beloved pets.

This pet awareness month was created by the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management to coincide with September’s Pain Awareness Month for humans.

Signs of Pain in Pets

Recognizing pain in pets can be challenging because they often hide their discomfort. Here are some signs to look for:

  1. Behavioral Changes: Increased aggression, anxiety, or withdrawal.
  2. Vocalization: Unusual whining, growling, or yelping.
  3. Altered Mobility: Limping, stiffness, or reluctance to move.
  4. Changes in Appetite: Eating less or avoiding food altogether.
  5. Grooming Habits: Excessive licking or grooming, especially in one area.
  6. Restlessness: Difficulty finding a comfortable position or pacing.
  7. Physical Symptoms: Swelling, trembling, or changes in posture.

If you notice any of these signs, consult with your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and pain management plan.
