Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week

Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week shines a light on pets who are often overlooked in shelters—those who may be older, have special needs, or are simply not as popular as others. This week encourages potential adopters to consider these “less adoptable” pets who are just as deserving of a loving home. By opening your heart to a pet who might otherwise be passed over, you’re not only gaining a loyal companion but also saving a life.

Created by Petfinder in 2009, Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week is always scheduled for the third week of September.

What Types of Pets Are Considered Less Adoptable?

Pets in shelters that might be considered “less adoptable” often include:

  • Senior Pets: Older animals are frequently overlooked in favor of younger ones.
  • Special Needs Pets: Those with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or behavioral issues. This can include FIV+ cats, deaf dogs, blind pets, and many others.
  • Certain Breeds: Breeds with unfair reputations, such as pit bulls, may be harder to place.
  • Large Dogs: Bigger dogs often struggle to find homes, especially in urban areas.
  • Shy or Timid Animals: Pets that are shy or anxious may not make a strong first impression.
  • Black Pets: Less visible in the back of kennels, black cats and dogs are adopted at a slower rate.

These pets are just as deserving of a loving home as any other and can make wonderful companions!
